Part 00

How to Use This Playbook

This isn't a book to read once and shelve. It's a working manual. Keep it open beside you the first few times you use Claude, and it stops being a reference and becomes a habit.

Three ways people use this

Cover to cover. If you're new, start at Part 1 and go in order. Each part builds on the last. You'll be functional within an hour and competitive within a month.

Jump to the skill. If you've used AI before and just want to get good fast, go straight to Part 3: Prompting — it's the core, and it's where the real gains live.

Grab and go. If you have a job to do right now, flip to Part 5: Real Workflows or the Prompt Library at the back, copy a recipe, and adapt it.

A note on honesty This guide will teach you what Claude is great at — and where it can let you down. That second part matters as much as the first. The most capable users aren't the ones who trust AI blindly; they're the ones who know exactly where its edges are and work confidently inside them.

The Mental Model

Part 01

What Claude Actually Is

Forget the features for a moment. If you get the mental model right — what this thing fundamentally is — everything else falls into place, and you'll adapt easily as the tools keep changing.

It's a mind you talk to, not a machine you operate

Older software was like a vending machine: press exactly B4, get exactly B4. Miss the button and it can't help you. Claude is the opposite. You describe what you want in plain words — the way you'd brief a sharp colleague — and it works out how to help. There are no commands to memorize. If you can explain it to a person, you can ask Claude.

It generates; it doesn't look up

Claude is a large language model. It learned by reading an enormous amount of text — more than any human could read in a thousand lifetimes — and from that it absorbed the patterns of how language and ideas fit together. So when you ask it something, it isn't fetching a stored answer from a database. It's composing a response, in real time, from everything it learned.

That's why it can answer questions no one ever wrote down before, hold a conversation, and adapt to your exact situation. It's less like a library that hands back books and more like a brilliant, widely-read colleague who can talk fluently about almost anything.

⚠ The flip side you must know Because Claude generates rather than looks up, it can occasionally produce something that sounds completely confident but is wrong. This is called a hallucination. It happens most with precise facts — exact dates, statistics, names, quotes, citations. Claude isn't lying; it has no intent. It just generated a plausible-sounding answer that happens to be off. The rule: for facts you'll act on — medical, legal, financial, anything with consequences — verify before you rely on it. Used this way, Claude is enormously powerful and you stay safe.

It has a knowledge cutoff

Claude learned from text gathered up to a certain point in time — its knowledge cutoff. Picture a brilliant person who read nonstop for years and then went off-grid for a while: they know an enormous amount, but nothing that happened after they left. Ask about last week's news or today's prices, and Claude's built-in knowledge may be stale or blank. The fix — covered later — is letting Claude search the web, which is how it reaches past its cutoff for current information.

Claude is not a search engine

This is the single most common misunderstanding, and clearing it up will immediately make you more effective.

They're complementary tools. Reach for search when you need to find current sources or a specific website. Reach for Claude when you need to think, create, transform, or produce the actual thing you needed.

★ Quick gut-check Before you ask, decide: am I trying to find something that already exists (search), or create/figure out something (Claude)? "Find the IRS form" → search. "Explain which IRS form I need and why" → Claude.

Claude vs. other AI assistants

Everything in this playbook transfers to any modern AI assistant — you're learning a durable skill, not just one product. But Claude, made by Anthropic, was built around a specific priority: being helpful, honest, and harmless. In practice that means it tends to tell you when it's unsure rather than bluffing, it gives balanced answers on contested topics, and it declines genuinely harmful requests. It's particularly strong at the things knowledge workers do all day — writing and editing, explaining complex things simply, reasoning carefully through problems, and working with long documents.

The takeaway from Part 1 Claude is a thinking partner you brief in plain language. It composes rather than retrieves — which makes it brilliantly flexible and occasionally, confidently wrong. Treat it like a sharp colleague: trust it with the thinking, verify the facts that matter, and never expect it to read your mind on the first try.

The Models — and When to Use Each

Claude comes in a few sizes. Picking the right one for the job saves you time and money — and the logic is ordinary, like choosing a vehicle for a trip.

The skill isn't "which is best" — it's "which fits the job"

There's no single best model. Using Opus for a task Haiku could nail is like renting a moving truck to pick up one bag of groceries: it works, but it's slower and costlier for no gain. Using Haiku for genuinely hard reasoning is like asking the scooter to haul a sofa.

★ The freeing rule You don't have to agonize. For most everyday work, Sonnet is the sweet spot and a perfectly safe default. Reach up to Opus when a problem is genuinely hard and important. Reach down to Haiku when it's simple and you want speed. When in doubt, Sonnet.

A simple decision in practice

As you use Claude you'll develop an instinct for this in days. Until then: default to Sonnet, and only switch when a task is clearly at one extreme.

Part 03

The Core Skill: Prompting

This is the heart of the entire playbook. Prompting is simply how you ask — and it's the single difference between people who find Claude "kind of useful" and people for whom it's transformative. The good news: it's not magic words or secret syntax. It's being clear about what you actually want — a skill you already have, applied to a new tool.

Watch what "how you ask" does

✗ Vaguewrite about coffee
✓ IntentionalWrite a friendly 100-word intro about cold brew coffee for a café menu. Warm, casual tone, aimed at first-time customers who find specialty coffee intimidating.

Both are valid. But the first leaves Claude guessing — about what, how long, for whom, what tone — so it produces something, just probably not what you pictured. The second tells Claude exactly enough to nail it on the first try. Vague in, generic out. Specific in, sharp out.

The mental shift Stop thinking "what's the magic phrase?" Start thinking "what would a brilliant colleague need to know to do this perfectly?" Then say that. Prompting is just thorough delegation.

The Core Skill

The Four Pieces of a Strong Prompt

Almost every great prompt contains up to four pieces. You won't always need all four — but knowing them turns "why was that answer bad?" into "I know exactly what to add."

① Task — the action verb

Write, summarize, explain, draft, compare, rewrite, analyze, plan. This is the one piece you should almost always include. It tells Claude what to actually do. Lead with it.

② Context — the background

Who is this for? Why? What's the situation? "Summarize this for my non-technical boss" produces a completely different result than "summarize this for a panel of experts." Context is how Claude tailors the output to your reality.

③ Specifics — the constraints & details

"Keep it under 50 words." "Mention the refund policy." "Avoid jargon." "Focus on the cost savings." These are the details that make the output yours instead of generic. (Tip: pointing Claude at material you've attached — "using the report I've pasted" — also counts as supplying specifics.)

④ Format — the shape of the output

Bullets? A paragraph? A table? An email with a subject line? A numbered checklist? Tell Claude how you want it laid out, and you'll get something you can use immediately instead of reformatting.

★ The habit that makes it automatic Lead with the Task, then add whichever of Context, Specifics, and Format the situation needs. More of the four usually means a better, more on-target result. Within a week this becomes second nature — you'll feel a vague prompt is "missing something" before you even hit enter.

It's a Conversation — Steer It

The biggest mistake new users make is treating Claude like a vending machine: one request, take the output, walk away. That leaves most of the value on the table.

Claude remembers everything earlier in your current conversation. So the real power is in the back-and-forth. Get a draft, then refine it with plain follow-ups:

✓ Steering follow-upsMake it about a third shorter. Warmer tone — less corporate. Add a line about the November deadline. Now turn it into an email with a subject line.

You don't have to write the perfect prompt up front. You steer toward what you want, turn by turn. A so-so first answer isn't a failure — it's a starting point.

Reframe "bad" first drafts "That's close, but make the tone warmer and cut the second paragraph" will usually get you exactly there in one nudge. Treat the first response as clay, not stone.

Give Claude a Role

Telling Claude who to be sharpens its output dramatically, because it pulls the right knowledge and tone to the front.

✓ Role promptingYou're an experienced hiring manager who has read thousands of résumés. Review the one I've pasted and tell me the three weakest spots and how to fix each.

"Act as a skeptical investor," "You're a patient math tutor for a 10-year-old," "Respond as a copy editor focused on clarity" — each produces a meaningfully different, more useful response than asking cold.

Show, Don't Just Tell (Examples)

When you want a specific style or format, give an example. It's the single most powerful way to control output.

Control the Output Precisely

Once you're comfortable, these levers give you near-total control over what comes back:

★ The single most useful follow-up phrase When an answer is too generic, say: "Be more specific and concrete — give me actual examples, not general advice." It cuts through vague output instantly.

The Moves That Separate Good From Great

The fundamentals get you 90% of the way. These are the techniques the top 10% of users reach for when the stakes are higher and "pretty good" isn't good enough. None are complicated — they're just deliberate.

1. Show, don't tell

Adjectives are weak instructions. "Make it punchy" means ten different things. Instead, give Claude an example of the exact thing you want and let it match the pattern. One good example outperforms a paragraph of description.

✗ TellingWrite three product taglines. Make them punchy and modern.
✓ ShowingWrite three product taglines in this style: "Stripe — payments infrastructure for the internet." Same rhythm — one noun phrase, an em-dash, a confident claim. Product: [yours].

2. Make it think before it answers

For anything involving reasoning — analysis, math, a theory, a tricky judgment — tell Claude to work through it step by step before giving the answer. The quality jump is real: reasoning out loud catches errors that a snap answer hides.

✓ Force the reasoningBefore you answer, think through this step by step — lay out the considerations, then weigh them, then give your conclusion. Don't lead with the conclusion.

3. Tell it what not to do

Claude has default habits — hedging, over-explaining, adding caveats. If a habit gets in your way, name it as a constraint. Negative instructions are some of the most powerful and most overlooked.

✓ Constrain the defaultsAnswer in under 100 words. No preamble, no "it depends," no bullet lists. Just the direct take, then one example.
★ The pattern behind all three You're removing ambiguity. Every one of these moves replaces a vague hope ("be good") with a concrete target Claude can actually hit. That's the whole game at the advanced level.

4. The critique-and-revise loop

The single highest-leverage advanced move. Don't accept the first draft — make Claude grade its own work against real criteria, then rewrite. You get a second draft that's already absorbed the feedback you'd otherwise have to give by hand.

5. Stack the role and the audience

A role tells Claude who's talking; an audience tells it who's listening. Stack both and the output shifts in tone, depth, and vocabulary all at once.

6. Chain it — let one answer feed the next

Big jobs don't happen in one prompt. Break the work into a chain where each step builds on the last. You stay in control at every handoff, and the quality compounds.

✓ A three-link chainStep 1: From these notes, pull the 5 key decisions [paste]. Then I'll say "go" and you'll draft a summary email from them. Then we'll turn the action items into a task list.

Run it one link at a time. Correct course between links instead of discovering at the end that step one was off.

The advanced prompting mindset Beginners write one prompt and take what they get. Advanced users run a loop — draft, critique, revise, chain — treating the first output as raw material, not a final answer. The work gets better because you direct the iteration.

Part 04

Bringing Your Own Material

This is the leap from "neat trivia machine" to "tool that handles my actual work." You're not limited to questions Claude already knows — you can bring your own documents, data, and situations, and it works directly with them.

What you can hand Claude

Turn a pile of raw material into a real conclusion. The trick is to separate gathering from judging — let Claude lay everything out first, then force a verdict.

Projects — your reusable workspaces

A Project bundles a set of instructions and reference files that persist across conversations. Set up a "Client Emails" project once — with your tone, your boundaries, your common context — and every chat inside it already knows how you work. Stop re-explaining yourself.

Custom style

You can teach Claude your writing style so its drafts already sound like you — your sentence rhythm, your level of formality, your quirks. Worth doing once if you write a lot; it pays back every draft.

Web search

When freshness matters — current events, recent prices, who holds a role now — Claude can search the web to reach past its knowledge cutoff, often returning sources you can click to verify. Use it whenever the answer depends on recent or changing facts.

Build Your System

Features are just parts. The advantage comes from wiring them into a setup that fits your work. Here's how to go from using Claude to owning a system.

Build a Project, step by step

A Project is a workspace that remembers your context so you never re-explain it. Set one up once and every chat inside it starts halfway done. Concretely:

  1. Name it for a recurring job — "Client Proposals," "Weekly Newsletter," "Board Updates."
  2. Write its instructions — who you are, your audience, your tone, your hard rules ("never use exclamation points," "always end with a clear ask").
  3. Add reference files — a past example you love, your style guide, key background docs.
  4. Work inside it. Every chat now inherits all of that automatically.

Stack your features

The real power is combining them. A single setup can run on all cylinders at once:

Project (your context + rules) + custom style (your voice) + web search (fresh facts) + memory (your history) = drafts that arrive already sounding like you, grounded in current information, with nothing re-explained. That's a system, not a chat.

Know when to start fresh

One non-obvious skill: long conversations drift. When a chat has wandered across many topics, Claude's focus blurs along with it. If answers start feeling vague or off, don't fight it — start a new chat and bring just the piece you need. A clean context beats a cluttered one almost every time.

Safety, Privacy & Judgment

The most capable users are also the most careful ones. None of this is reason to be afraid — it's ordinary digital hygiene plus good judgment. Get these habits right and you can use Claude freely and confidently.

Keep genuinely private things private

Be thoughtful about sensitive information — passwords, full credit card or bank numbers, Social Security numbers, other people's private data. The same instinct that stops you emailing a password applies here. Most work — drafting, summarizing, brainstorming, analyzing — involves no sensitive data at all, so use Claude often and freely. When a document does contain something sensitive, swap it for a placeholder first:

Verify what matters

Remember the hallucination rule from Part 1: a confident tone is not proof. For anything you'll act on — medical, legal, financial, a fact going into something important — verify it. Web search with sources is your friend here. Claude is a brilliant first draft and thinking partner; you remain the editor and the decision-maker.

⚠ A simple test before you rely on an answer Ask yourself: "If this specific detail were wrong, would it cause real harm or embarrassment?" If yes, verify it independently before using it. If no, you're probably fine to proceed.

Judgment: you're still in charge

Claude is a tool for your thinking, not a replacement for it. Use it to draft, explore, and pressure-test — then apply your own judgment, expertise, and accountability. The professionals who win with AI treat it as a force multiplier on their skills, not a substitute for having them.
